Men’s Basketball Falls Late To Dougherty Valley

By Tommy Fellner

The Acalanes Men’s Basketball team (6-19) lost to Dougherty Valley 69-62 this tuesday on senior night. The Dons suffered their ninth home loss of the season with the seven point defeat.

Acalanes started the game off slow, similar to their last game against Alhambra where they relied on a huge fourth quarter to bring themselves within range of winning the game, but came up just short. This time, the Dons kept it much closer and senior Joey Hewitt, playing his final home game, hit a buzzer beater three pointer to bring Acalanes within six.

In the second quarter, the Dons managed to keep the Wildcats close. Although Acalanes outscored Dougherty Valley, the Wildcats retained a four point lead, as well as some momentum heading into halftime.

Acalanes came out firing in the second half. Led by senior Hewitt, the Dons played furiously and were going back and forth with the Wildcats. However, this intense play came with a cost and Hewitt, the Dons’ go to player, quickly found himself in foul trouble. At the end of the third both teams were tied 47-47.

The fourth quarter was much more of the back and forth. Until a frustrated Hewitt fouled out with 7:41 left to play in the game. The Dons searched for a replacement clutch player in senior Casey Harrington or junior Matt Bostwick, both playing an exceptional game, but neither could recreate Hewitt’s magic.

In the end, the Wildcats triumped and Acalanes and their seniors had a heartbreaking loss, 69-62.
