By Tommy Fellner // The Acalanes Mens Basketball team (8-9, 1-2 DFAL) was short-handed in their lopsided 72-40 loss to Dougherty Valley this Friday night.
The Dons, due to injuries and sickness, were missing three of their starters, one being the Dons’ leading scorer in Alex Kinnear.
Acalanes needed their players to step up and fill those roles and they did just that for half of the game but then in the second half Dougherty Valley switched up their defense and the Dons were unable to adapt.
In the first the Dons kept things decently close, but were always trailing the 15-1 Wildcats, who were fresh off a close win over Campolindo. Going into the half, Acalanes trailed 28-23.
Halfway through the third quarter with the score differential still at 5, Dougherty Valley ramped up the pressure and went into a full-court press. This put the Dons into a frenzy and they committed turnover after turnover it seemed for the rest of the quarter.
Dougherty Valley closed out the quarter on a 21-1, pushing the score to 59-33, and ending all hopes of an Acalanes comeback.
In the fourth both teams cleared the benches, which allowed for less experienced players to get valuable time on the court.
Senior Andrew McKendell led the way with 8 points and recorded 6 assists, Aaron Hill and Nick Price also scored 8 points for the Dons.
