The #1 seeded Acalanes Dons’ baseball team made its way to the North Coast Section (NCS) Division III championship game with an emphatic 6-2 win over league rival and #12 seeded Miramonte in the semifinal.
Junior Josh Candau pitched 5 innings of two run ball while striking out three in the win. Closing out the victory was junior Kevin McConnell who pitched two shutout innings.
As far as the offense, junior Daniel Kim led the way, as he drove in four RBIs, two of those RBIs coming from a double into the left-center field gap. Other RBI producers came from junior Paul Griessel and senior Tom Henderson as both had one each.
A clutch play made during the game was when senior Jake Berry ran down a deep fly ball into the right-center field gap to retire the side, making a “Willie Mays” -like play. This surely saved extra bases for the Matadors and at least two runs.
The Dons’ play at St. Mary’s College this Saturday at 3:30 pm for a chance to clinch their fourth title in the last six years. They play #3 seeded Analy.
