The women’s basketball team crushed Las Lomas 75-38 last Friday night to capture their second consecutive undefeated Diablo Athletic League (DAL) championship.

Before tipoff, seniors Kaylee Pond, Lauren Kobashigawa, Lauren Frechman, Mikaela Valerio, and Daphne Ganter stepped out onto the court with their families to be honored by the crowd for their hard work and achievements on and off the court.

“It is really sad that this is the last year I get to play with these girls. It was awesome getting to spend my senior night with all of them. They made all the seniors feel very loved,” Valerio said.

All five seniors started in their final league game and came out strong against the Knights. The Lady Dons took a quick lead and never relinquished it during the first quarter.

“The team was fired up going into the game against Las Lomas with it being senior night and our last league game at home,” Kobashigawa said.

Junior Grace Gebhardt scored a short two-pointer in the paint to extend the lead to 12-2, leading to a Knights timeout.

However, the Lady Dons continued their scoring onslaught. Frechman made a three to beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter and put Acalanes up 19-7. During the second quarter, the Knights tried to come back, but the Lady Dons had every answer. Gebhardt scored an excellent put back shot to put the Lady Dons up 22-12. By halftime, the Lady Dons were up 37-18.

The second half was the same offensive attack. A three-pointer from Kobashigawa extended the lead to 49-23. With help from great performances by Gebhardt and Frechman, the game ended with an astounding final score of 75-38.

The Lady Dons are now focusing on preparing for the playoffs. They host Tamalpias Tuesday, Feb. 18 as the 4th seed.

“Our goal now is winning the North Coast Section, and I think that if we stay focused and motivated, we have a shot at doing so,” Kobashigawa said.
